The District 214 future business moguls – from Elk Grove and Wheeling High Schools – pitched business proposals and competed for prizes and internship opportunities.
The top three teams from Wheeling and Elk Grove faced off Tuesday in front of the panel, which included Wheeling Mayor Dean Argiris and Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson.

Throughout the year, local partners with professional roots in a variety of areas – from marketing and branding to finance and business development – were co-teaching alongside District 214 teachers to deliver relevant entrepreneurship education.
The District 214 entrepreneurship curriculum will expand to Buffalo Grove, Hersey and Rolling Meadows High Schools next fall.

Arlington Heights Memorial Day Parade Canceled Because of Weather Forecast with "50% Chance of a Thunderstorm"
Memorial Day is three days away, but the Arlington Heights Memorial Day parade has been canceled by the parade organizer because of concerns about severe weather and the potential for wasted expenses to participating units if the parade were to be canceled immediately before the scheduled date and time.
Arlington Heights Police Department has also sent out a notice that the Arlington Heights Memorial Day parade has been canceled.
Following is a letter from parade organizer Greg Padovani ...
Dear Veterans, Friends and Neighbors:
Based on the weather forecasts for Monday, May 25, 2015, we have had to make some VERY tough decisions…
#1 – CANCEL THE 2015 MEMORIAL DAY PARADE: It breaks my heart to cancel the Parade, but we MUST consider the safety of our parade participants and viewers. As it stands now, the weather forecasts (all three models) indicate sprinkles of rain throughout the morning (not so bad), but a 50% chance of a thunderstorm from 9 am to 10 am (the very time of the Parade).
I take full responsibility for this decision. In making it, I considered the following:
- We have ~3,500 people marching in the parade. Of these, approximately 1,500 are kids and many others are senior veterans. If we were to assemble them at the beginning of the parade OR if we were to begin marching, they would be exposed to a storm. There simply would not be enough buildings to shelter this many people. Even if there were, the resulting confusion would heighten the danger to everyone.
- The decision to cancel EARLY will allow all of our parade units to opt out of their contacts for buses, etc - without charge. If we were to wait until Saturday or Sunday to cancel, most of these units would be required pay the full contract. We estimate that the savings to individual units will be approximately $5,000 to $6,000.
The sad part is that we had so many great things planned for the parade - the "THANK YOU VETERANS" signs especially.
The Arlington Hts Chamber of Commerce had 3,000 of THANK YOU VETERANS signs printed. You can see them in windows around town. For the parade, teams of volunteers would pass out the signs to parade viewers along the entire 1.25 mile route with the instructions to hold the sign up and yell THANK YOU when the veterans and military units passed by. Veterans from all over were coming to Arlington Hts to experience the well deserved THANK YOUs for their service.
The GOOD NEWS is that we will store these signs for use in our 2016 Memorial Day Parade. We ask that anyone who has a sign now, please store these for future use.
#2 - The 2015 MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY will be moved inside to the Christian Liberty Academy gym (see MAP).
Our deepest thanks to the Christian Liberty Academy (CLA) for their support and help on this major effort! CLA is in the former Arlington High School. CLA is just one short block North and one short block WEST of Memorial Park.
The Ceremony will start at 11 am (sharp) and will be conducted that same as if it were outdoors at Memorial Park.
Inside the gym, CLA will setup all the bleachers as well as hundreds of chairs on the floor. A podium with mic will be on stage along with chairs for dignitaries and room for the 144th Army Band.
I have attached the CEREMONY PROGRAM for your information.
EVERYONE is invited (encouraged) to join us at this Ceremony to honor our Fallen Heroes – especially Arlington's Fallen Heroes – the 58 young men from our town who died in the service of our Nation – from the civil war to Afghanistan. The 58 Fallen Hero Wreaths will be displayed in front of the main stage. You can see a List of their names on page 4 of the PROGRAM.
On behalf of all our Gold Star Families and our veterans, I want to thank the people of Arlington Heights for their wonderful support for Memorial Day and throughout the year.
Respectfully,
Greg

The boy ran away and the driver did not follow the boy. Sagamore Drive is about three blocks south of Enders-Salk Elementary School.
No additional specific information was provided regarding the vehicle or the driver.

Safety Alert fro District 54
Safety Alert
Posted by Terri McHugh on Thursday, May 21st, 2015 at 3:37 pm
This morning, one of our students reported that he was approached by a man in a black, 4-door vehicle and offered a ride, while on his way to Enders-Salk School on Sagamore Drive in Schaumburg. He ran away and the car did not follow him. He made it to school safely and told his teacher. The Schaumburg Police Department is investigating the matter.
Although we don't have a more specific description of the man or the vehicle, District 54 wanted to ask parents to remind their children about ways to stay safe on the way to and from school or anytime they are outside. Here are some tips for you and your family on student safety and security.
Know the route your children walk to school, to the bus stop, to friends' homes and to play areas. Walk with them until you are acquainted with their routine.
Encourage them to walk with a buddy or ask an older student you know to accompany your children to school or the bus stop, and back.
Check out the neighborhood with your children and warn them of potential hazards. Point out homes of people you know and other safe places where they can go for help.
Tell your children to always refuse to go anywhere with people they don't know. If someone they don't know stops to ask directions, teach your students to step well back so they can get away fast.
Instruct them to always say "no" if a grownup invites them into their car or home, unless you have given them permission.
Click here to access a Stranger Danger Fact Sheet to help you talk about this topic at home with your child.
Any questions or information about this incident can be directed to the Schaumburg Police Department at (847) 882-3534.

Amtrak Train #188 Was Traveling at 106 MPH When Engineer Applied Brakes on Curve Regulated at 50 MPH
NTSB released preliminary crash information at a press conference in Philadelphia just after 5:00 p.m. The crashed Amtrak train #188 consisted of a locomotive and seven passenger cars. All vehicles left the railroad tracks while making a left-hand turn at the curve in the railroad.
The train left the Penn station at 9:10 p.m. with 243 occupants on board and crashed at 9:21 p.m.
Maximum speed at the crash site is designated at 50 mph through the curve.
Engineer-induced braking was detected by the black box data recorder. When the engineer applied the brakes, the train was traveling approximately 106 mph. The train crash and impact three seconds later stopped data transmission from the black box at a speed of about 102 mph.
The track has been released to Amtrak for rebuilding.
NTSB plans to interview the train crew and passengers.

Death Investigation on Windsor Dr South of Wilshire Ln, Arlington Heights
Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 6:18 PM Friday to a report of an unresponsive man in or near a home in the block of 300 South Windsor Dr Arlington Heights, IL. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report that a neighbor was checking on a man and found the man unresponsive.
Police on the scene did not reveal any details, but a Cook County Medical Examiner was on the scene for a death investigation.
At this time it is unknown if there was reason for suspicion about the death other than the fact that the home was the location of a working fire on May 19, 2014 at about 8:30 a.m. Police are possibly being extra cautious with the death solely because of the house fire about one year ago. If there are other details that raised suspicions about the death, police have not indicated such a suspicion, and have not indicated any concern about a threat in the neighborhood.
At least seven marked police vehicles were on the scene and at least three unmarked police vehicles with detectives and forensics investigators were on the scene at 4:30 p.m. Neighbors noticed the extra police activity about 2:30 p.m.
When firefighters arrived last year there was fire and smoke showing from a first floor window at a breezeway between the house and the garage. The fire was extinguished within ten minutes and no residents were home at the time of the fire.
Neighbors state the house was renovated for about a year, and that the resident, believed to be a man in his 70s, may have recently moved back into the house.
