Nch Unveils Germ-Zapping Robot To Enhance Patient Safety

As hospitals across the nation look for new and innovative ways to battle deadly pathogens and kill multi-drug resistant organisms that put patients at risk, Northwest Community Healthcare (NCH) has taken a leap into the future with the installation of two germ-zapping robots that eliminate hard-to-kill bugs in hard-to-clean places.

The Xenex robots use pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV-C) light that is 25,000 times more powerful than sunlight to destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even bacterial spores. The system is effective against even the most dangerous pathogens, including Clostridium difficile (C. diff), norovirus, influenza, and staph bacteria, including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, better known as MRSA.

The Xenex system can disinfect a room in minutes and is easily portable, allowing it to be used in virtually any location within the hospital. NCH is the first hospital in the region to implement the Xenex UV room disinfection system, which has been credited for helping other healthcare facilities in the U.S. decrease their MRSA and C.diff infection rates by more than 50 percent, according to studies.
"This technology represents a great leap forward in preventing infections and ensuring patient safety," says Tricia Elliott, Executive Director, Quality and Decision Support, at NCH. "NCH is excited to begin using the Xenex robots to help us achieve our goals in infection prevention. Patient safety remains our top priority."

Because the Xenex robots use UV light, they are able to reach every surface in the room and do not leave a chemical residue. Each treatment takes about 5 minutes. To disinfect a room after standard cleaning procedures are complete, hospital team members wheel the Xenex robot into the room, position it beside the bed, begin the automated sequence, and then leave the room. A sign is placed outside the room warning people not to enter while the robot is in operation, and a motion sensor on the robot automatically shuts off the machine if anyone should enter. The process is then repeated on the other side of the bed and in the bathroom, for a total of 15 minutes to thoroughly clean each room.

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative At Arlington Heights Police Headquarters And Mount Prospect Public Safety Building

On October 26th, the Arlington Heights Police Department, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will participate in a program to remove potentially dangerous prescription drugs from homes.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative provides an opportunity for the public to surrender unwanted, expired and unused pharmaceuticals and unwanted over the counter medication to law enforcement officers for their proper disposal. This will be a great opportunity for those who have accumulated unused or unwanted prescription drugs, to safely dispose of them.
This one-day effort brings national attention to the issue of pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse. Having unused and expired medicine in your home increases the risk of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisoning.

The collection site for the pharmaceuticals is the Arlington Heights Police Department located at 200 E. Sigwalt Street, Saturday, October 26th between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Update On 100 Mph Lexus From October 14: Dui, Fleeing And Eluding On Palatine Rd, Arlington Heights

Several alert citizens were concerned about a police incident involving a driver that fled in a silver Lexus on Monday, October 14, 2013 about 8:30 a.m. -- especially since the incident was in proximity of two attacks on females that occurred recently. The incident was a traffic/DUI incident that is not known to be connected to the cases involving early morning attacks on females at Lake Arlington and at Hintz Road that occurred about dawn on Thursday, September 26, 2013 and Friday, October 11, 2013, respectively.

On Monday, October 14, 2013 at about 8:34 a.m. an Arlington Heights police officer observed a silver Lexus RX 350 vehicle speeding eastbound on Palatine Road at Forrest Avenue. The officer activated his emergency lights. Police observed the offender drive across the raised median into oncoming westbound lanes around a vehicle that was stopped at the traffic signal at Schoenbeck Road. The driver then disobeyed the traffic signal and passed through the intersection. The officer lost sight of the vehicle, but continued in the same direction without emergency lights. The offending vehicle was reported to be traveling in excess of 100 mph. Police pulled up behind the offender at Wheeling Road, but the offender drove across the raised median again, and through a red light again -- nearly colliding with oncoming traffic. The offender then turned northbound on Wheeling Road. Because of the excessive speed, the officer lost sight of the offending vehicle, but not before he was able to obtain the license plate number. Wheeling police were called for assistance in searching for the vehicle. Ten minutes later Wheeling police found the unoccupied vehicle parked in the 400 block of Denniston Court in Wheeling. The offender was found by another Wheeling police officer at Hintz Road, just east of the railroad tracks. A strong odor of alcoholic beverage was allegedly on the offender's breath.

Police arrested George P Lewkowicz, a male age 31, of the 1800 block of Hawk Lane in Elk Grove Village.

Lewkowicz was charged with the following ...
Aggravated DUI for driving while intoxicated with a suspended driver's license.
DUI
Fleeing/Eluding police
Driving on a suspended license
Reckless driving
Speeding
Improper Traffic Lane Usage (two times)
Disregarding a traffic light (two times)

Court date is November 12, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.

Palatine Receives Illinois Emergency Management Agency Grant Funding To Prepare For Emergencies

In late August, Governor Pat Quinn announced that grants totaling $4 million have been awarded by the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) to help 121 accredited city and county emergency management agencies throughout Illinois support local disaster preparation and response efforts. Among those receiving funds was the Village of Palatine who received over $28,000 in financial assistance. Palatine is one of only 22 municipalities in the state to receive this funding.

In order for a municipality to be eligible for these federal funds, their emergency management program must be accredited. Standards require the program meet requirements such as having an Emergency Operations Plan (EOP), comply with the National Incident Management System (NIMS), have a dedicated Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and conduct ongoing training and exercises.

"These funds allow us to continue to meet our obligation to the community to be prepared for any emergency or disaster," commented Tom Smith; Palatine's Emergency Management Coordinator. "Although the funds are only a portion of our emergency management budget they help offset expenses during these tough economic times."

The Emergency Management Performance Grants (EMPG) is funded through a grant IEMA receives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grants, which are awarded annually, can be used for day-to-day operations of local emergency management programs. Eligible costs include salary and benefits of full and part-time emergency management employees, equipment, training, travel and expenses associated with ongoing maintenance.

To learn more about the Village of Palatine's Emergency Management Agency programs please go to www.palatine-ema.org.
