Nch Seeks Lovable Dogs And Handlers To Expand Hospital's Animal-Assisted Therapy

5:11 PM Thursday ENTER ADDRESS. Northwest Community Healthcare's (NCH) Animal-Assisted Therapy program is looking for more four-legged friendly volunteers and their handlers to help expand the popular program that aids patients during their recovery. Lovable canines and their volunteer owners have helped bring comfort and smiles to patients and visitors at NCH for seven years.

A team consists of a dog and its handler, who must be the owner of the pet and at least 18 years old. Therapy dogs can be any breed, but must be in good health, obedient, enjoy people and get along with other dogs.

Volunteers need to complete an application. Qualifying dogs will go through a two-hour temperament and obedience evaluation by professional dog trainers on Saturday, August 23. Teams that pass will attend a three-day training course at the hospital that includes mock and trainer-supervised patient visits, and a briefing on hospital policies and infection control practices. The training – held October 4, 5 and 11 – will prepare teams for hospital visits. There are modest fees to help offset the costs of the temperament evaluation and training.

Since its launch in 2007, NCH's Animal-Assisted Therapy program has achieved great success and popularity. Animal-Assisted Therapy is a proven method of improving a patient's physical health by providing a higher level of emotional comfort while serving as a diversion from their illness. The NCH program has grown to 70 dog and handler teams that make hospital-wide visits.

A loving dog can assist in reducing a patient's stress, pain, anxiety and loneliness. Interaction between patients and pets can raise a person's spirits and improve their physical well-being by lowering blood pressure and accelerating recovery times.

"The animals provide a dimension of care that is unlike any other therapy," said Kathy King, manager of Animal-Assisted Therapy at NCH. "Patients simply love the dogs. Our teams have made more than 68,000 patient visits in nearly seven years."

Download an application for the upcoming training session. For more details on NCH's Animal-Assisted Therapy program, opportunity, visit the hospital's website at www.nch.org/animalassist, or call 847.618.7963. Sponsorships are available to support the dog and handler teams.

Village Survey Shows 8.7% Vacancy Rate In Downtown Arlington Heights; Compared To 10.7% Cb Richard Ellis Chicagoland Study

Arlington Heights' Downtown vacancy rate of 8.7 percent for first-floor business space compares favorably to the entire metro area. The Village completed a survey in July 2014 of the Downtown B-5 zoning district.

According to a report from CB Richard Ellis included in the Chicago Retail MarketView Q1 2014, the Chicago Metro Area's retail vacancy rate was 10.4% in April 2014, while the Northwest Suburbs showed a 13.3% vacancy rate for the same time period. Even in peak economic times, the Village's Downtown vacancy rates never reach zero, and are typically between 6-10 percent.

The B-5 zoning district does not encompass any of the properties south of Sigwalt Street or east of Arlington Heights Road.

Based on the total square footage of businesses occupying first-floor space in the Downtown, the two largest business types are restaurants and service businesses. Combined, these businesses occupy approximately 42 percent of all first-floor space in the Downtown. Of the total square footage of first-floor businesses in Downtown, restaurants are 21.7% of the total, services are 20.5% and retail is 17.2%.

Nine new businesses have opened, or will soon be opening, in the Downtown this year.

Reckless Driver In Sport Compact Car Aims At Oncoming Victim, Tailgates Victim From Arlington Heights Rd And White Oak St, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police received a report about 12:30 AM Monday of a reckless driver near Arlington Heights Road and White Oak Arlington Heights, IL. Police received a report from a witness that an unknown offending driver aimed his vehicle at an oncoming vehicle that was proceeding through the controlled intersection on a green light.

The victim's vehicle was northbound without stopping in the right lane with a green light when the offending driver aimed his vehicle at the victim's vehicle (as if to turn eastbound on White Oak Street), and stopped facing southbound in the northbound left lane at the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and White Oak Street -- short of crashing into the victim's vehicle.

The victim's vehicle continued northbound on Arlington Heights Road. The offending driver then made a U-Turn and headed northbound in front of the witness, who was also traveling northbound. The offending driver sped up to tailgate the victim's vehicle.

The witness then flashed his bright lights at the offending vehicle while following the offending vehicle from the left lane. The offending driver then made a fast right turn on Central Road and continued eastbound on Central Road.

Both witness and victim continued northbound on Arlington Heights Road from Central Road.

The offending hatchback vehicle was described as a "Fast and Furious" type Subaru Impreza WRX STi or Honda Civic with a sports style type vehicle. The color description of the vehicle was not available.
The vehicle had white decals on the rear window.

The offending driver was described as a male/Asian in his 20s wearing a white baseball cap backwards.

The female driver thanked the witness at a traffic signal red light at Arlington Heights Road and Park Street. The victim did not report the incident to police, but the incident was reported by the witness.

The incident is reported to have occurred about 12:05 a.m. Monday.
