Cook County Sheriff Warns of Spoofing Caller ID Scam Impersonating IRS

Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning of a phone scam in which a caller claims to be a member of the Cook County Sheriff's Office.

In this scam, the unknown offenders use a spoofing application to make it appear on Caller ID that the phone call is coming from a Sheriff's Office number. The caller identifies as a Cook County Sheriff's officer and tells the victim that they are being investigated for fraud by the IRS. The caller tells the
victim to call an IRS agent at a particular number.

This is a scam. The Sheriff's Office is not working with the IRS on any cases.
Sheriff Dart offers the following tips to avoid becoming a phone scam victim:

• If you believe the call is suspicious, hang up.

• Do not give any personal information, such as social security or bank account numbers, over the phone.

• If the caller claims to be from a specific agency, hang up and call that agency to determine if there is a legitimate reason to contact you. Do not use the phone number the caller gives you.

• If you receive a phone call about owing taxes, hang up and call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 if you believe you may owe taxes.

• Report any bogus IRS phone calls to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.

Sheriff Dart asks anyone who may believe they are victim of this scam, or may have information about the perpetrators, to call Sheriff's Police at 708-865-4896.

Village of Arlington Heights Warns Residents About Illegal Sky Lanterns

This time of year many celebrations are being planned - graduations, weddings, family reunions and other parties. When making your plans, please remember that the popular "sky lanterns," which look like a small air balloon and use a candle or other fuel to rise into the sky, are not allowed to be used in Illinois by the State Fire Marshal.

Once it is lit and airborne there is no control of where it may travel. Wind may force it back to the ground and blow hot air out of the sides. There is a risk of a fire if a flame drops onto a rooftop, trees or power lines before the flame is totally extinguished.

Because of the risk of fire using sky lanterns, the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office has banned the use of these devices in Illinois and has added sky lanterns to a list of prohibited items under the Fireworks Regulation Act. Any questions, please call the Arlington Heights Fire Department or Building Services.

Van Driver Killed in Rear End Crash with Tow Truck on Westbound I-90 Near Central Rd and Freeman Rd, Hoffman Estates

Illinois State Police and Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:00 AM Thursday to a report of crash with injuries involving a van and a tow truck on westbound Interstate 90 42.066635, -88.120246 (63.5 W I-90 Schaumburg, Il). Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report from police and IDOT workers on the scene that a van crashed into a tow truck.

A full-sized van hit a flatbed tow truck, which spun the tow truck almost 180 degrees and destroyed the van. The van was most severely damaged on the front drivers side with the steering wheel and steering column pushed into the backseat passenger seat of the van.

The driver of the van was killed immediately at the scene. Schaumburg firefighters worked to extricate the body from the wreckage and also searched the shoulder area on the north side of I-90 to make sure no other people were ejected in the crash.

Illinois State Police shut down westbound lanes at Route 53 and at Arlington Heights Road. State Troopers helped westbound drivers reverse direction from the blocked crash scene. The first vehicles closest to the crash scene waited until after 3:00 a.m. to be reversed off of the westbound lanes. Motorists then exited at Roselle Road on the ramp from westbound I-90.

The identity of the van driver was not immediately released. The tow truck driver was outside his vehicle when the crash occurred and may have been grazed by the vehicle. He was transported to an area hospital. Initially it was reported that a State Trooper was also grazed, but that was not confirmed.

Illinois State Police investigated the fatal crash scene with westbound I-90 closed until about 6:00 a.m.

The crash occurred right at the location of a flashing text sign that warned, "NIGHTLY LANE CLOSURES" and "BE ALERT."

The crash occurred just days after the Daily Herald published an article that noted the increase in number of crashes during the I-90 construction project. This week is also National Work Zone Awareness Week in Illinois. The Illinois Department of Transportation has been appealing to drivers all week about passing safely through these zones.

Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics staged near Barrington Road and some emergency vehicles accessed the crash scene going the wrong way on westbound I-90 from Barrington Road or from Central Road just north of I-90.

After reporting that s shooting of two people in Barrington near Northwest Highway and Shorely Drive was an isolated incident, two men and a woman have been arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Police say the shooting resulted in two "people" injured. One of the "people" was critically injured.

The three arrested were identified as ...

Sherron P. Reed Jr, 20, of the 200 block of Sheridan Street, Joliet;

Brandon D. Campbell, 21, of the 400 block of Irving Street, Joliet; and

Justin L. Crowder, 19, of the 1400 block of Eunice Avenue, Joliet

The three suspects and the two shooting victims attended the same party Saturday night, according to Barrington Police Department.

The three got into their car and were traveling home on Route 14 when a confrontation with people in another vehicle began, police said.

Police say Reed, Campbell and Crowder are suspected of firing shots with an AR-15 rifle from their moving vehicle into the victims' moving vehicle. The victim's vehicle crashed into a Canadian National railroad gate on the eastbound side of Northwest Highway and about 540 feet east of Shorely Drive.

Barrington police responded to a call of a possible shooting near Route 14 and Shorely Drive at 3:09 a.m.

Barrington firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:15 AM Sunday to a report of a gunshot victim near the railroad tracks at Northwest Highway and Shorely Drive Barrington, IL. Police initially responded to a report of a person injured at 3:09 a.m.

A Chevy sedan was found crashed into a railroad gate at the southwest corner of the railroad grade crossing just west of Lake Zurich Road and east of Illinois Route 59. The crashed Chevy sedan — possibly charcoal gray — appeared to have been eastbound on US 14 (Northwest Highway) before the crash, unless the driver attempted a U-turn after traveling westbound on Northwest Highway.

Barrington police say the motive for the shooting is under investigation. Police did not release the location of the party.

Reed, Campbell and Crowder were scheduled to appear in Lake County bond court Wednesday.
