Memorial Day Is Every Day for Family and Combat Veterans Who Know Those That Never Came Home

For family and combat veterans who know people who didn't come home, every day is Memorial Day.

For combat veterans that left fellow soldiers behind, it might be survivor's guilt that nags them daily. For family members of a KIA solder, it is deep sorrow that hits them daily.

Arlington Heights residents Bob and Linda Stack lost their son USMC Lance Cpl. James Bray Stack on November 10, 2010 when he was killed during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan after only one month of his first tour of duty overseas. Last November, they held a Memorial Service at Memory Gardens Cemetery marking five years since their son's death as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

They credit support of friends and a faith in God and a life hereafter -- beyond an earthly temporary place with its wars, mass shootings, poverty and evil politics -- and an afterlife where their son guards the streets of Heaven.

Garbage Truck Hits Low Power Line on Beverly Land North of Hawthorne St, Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 3:18 PM Friday to a report of crash involving a garbage truck and a power line near 746 N Beverly Lane Arlington Heights, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics discovered that garbage truck hit a low power line that was hanging over the street -- connected to a streetlight.

Impact snapped and brought down the wood streetlight pole. There was also possibly a transformer atop the street light pole which fell into the garbage truck bin.

Firefighters checked for live power lines, diked the fluid leak when it was an unknown chemical, and used adsorbent material to collect the leaking fluid.

ComEd has several crews on the scene for repair.

Groot responded immediately with managers and a vehicle repair crew.

No residents lost power. The neighborhood has been considering underground power line upgrades, but apparently three households rejected the proposal recently.

Cable TV Technician Accused of Stealing Gun in Palatine Residence While He Was Working on Cable TV

A cable TV technician with no known criminal background was in court Friday accused of stealing a handgun from a Palatine residence while he was working as a cable TV technician.

The stolen gun was recovered following a March 2016 shootout with Chicago police. The discovery of the gun and subsequent investigation led to the arrest of 20-year-old cable TV technician Andre Cummings, Jr.

Chicago police recovered the gun on March 14, after another man used it to shoot at Chicago police officers. Police returned fire and shot and killed the man, according to Cook County assistant state's attorney David Shin. Police tracked down the weapon's owner with the residence in Palatine. The gun owner said he didn't realize the weapon was missing. The residence may have been located in unincorporated Palatine.

Shin said that Cummings was working as a cable TV technician for an undisclosed Cable TV provider on October 9, 2015, when he noticed a .40 caliber weapon in a box in a bedroom dresser. Cummings put the weapon in his bag and continued working as a cable TV technician, Shin said.

Cummings said he is an aspiring rapper and told Cook County sheriff's police he "took the gun in an instant without thinking" because he wanted to use it in a music video, Shin said. Cummings told police the gun was stolen from his car in December, Shin said.

Andre Cummings, Jr. was ordered held on $75,000 bail Friday on charges of residential burglary, a class one felony which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Cummings remains in jail on Monday May 16, 2016, and is scheduled to appear again in court on June 3, 2016.

Streamwood Police Arrest Suspect in Armed Robberies in Arlington Heights, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Streamwood

Andrew Sibben of Hoffman Estates was ordered held without bond Friday May 13, 2016 following his arrest as a suspect in a string of armed robberies. Sibben is suspected of committing several robberies starting May 8 through May 11, 2016 in Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Streamwood.

Andrew Sibben, 41, was charged with four counts of armed robbery, aggravated robbery and possession of a controlled substance in connection with robberies in Arlington Heights, Mount Prospect, Rolling Meadows, and Streamwood. At the time of his arrest, Sibben was already wanted on a warrant for an October 2015 armed robbery in Morton Grove.

Morton Grove police, responding to a regional alert, identified Sibben as a suspect in an October 21, 2015, robbery which had the "same modus operandi," said according to assistant state's attorney David Shin. Sibben was arrested a suspect in the armed robbery of a cashier at Palace Cantonese Restaurant and also a Subway restaurant in Morton Grove in October 2015. Sibben allegedly had also attempted to rob Best Cleaners in Glenview in October 2015.

Recently, the first of the suspect's alleged four robberies occurred Sunday, May 8, 2016 at 11:45 am at the Mobil gas station 1712 West Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights. Shin said Sibben displayed a handgun and demanded money from the clerk, who handed over $194. Shin said Sibben was captured by video surveillance leaving the gas station with the money in a plastic bag and getting into a white sedan. Arlington Heights police released none of the physical description information of the suspect on Monday May 9, 2016 a day after the armed robbery. Arlington Heights Police Department only reported that an unknown offender displayed a handgun and demanded money from the cashier.
Arlington Heights Police Department also apparently did not broadcast the armed robbery on the ISPERN (Illinois State Police Emergency Radio Network) radio channel, which is used to urgently alert area police departments in Illinois that a robbery or other serious crime has occurred.

The second robbery occurred on Monday May 9, 2016 when Sibben allegedly robbed a Streamwood convenience store, taking about $1,400. The robbery occurred about 8:30 a.m. on Monday at the 7-Eleven store. Streamwood police broadcast the alert on ISPERN Monday morning, including descriptive information about a white 4-door sedan used to flee the robbery.

The third robbery occurred Tuesday May 10, 2016, at a Subway fast-food restaurant at 1705 West Algonquin Road in Mount Prospect. Shin said Sibben displayed a gun, demanded money and fled with $175 in a white sedan. The robbery occurred at 10:58 am. Mount Prospect Police Department released a statement about the robbery including a physical description, security image of the suspect, and a description of the vehicle used by the suspect at 4:15 p.m. the same day as the robbery.

The fourth robbery occurred Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 11:14 am when the suspect allegedly fled with $418, after robbing the GameStop store at 1645 Algonquin Road in Rolling Meadows. Rolling Meadows police reported the crime in their police blotter (date unknown). Currently it is not believed that Rolling Meadows police released information about the robbery to the media. There was no mention of the GameStop robbery on the official Rolling Meadow Police Department Twitter account for the time period from May 11, 2016 to May 13, 2016. There was also no mention of the GameStop robbery on the official Rolling Meadow Police Department Facebook account for the time period from May 11, 2016 to May 13, 2016. Rolling Meadows police also apparently did not urgently broadcast an ISPERN message regarding the armed robbery to area Illinois police departments.

On Thursday May 12, 2016 Streamwood police arrested Sibben Thursday at a motel in Hoffman Estates, where they discovered property that included a pellet gun and several other items connected with the robberies. A small amount of drugs were also discovered, according to Shin. Police located Sibben the motel where motel guests are required to register their vehicle.

Sibben, held without bond, is scheduled to appear in Cook County Rolling Meadows Court on Friday May 20, 2016 following a scheduled May 16, 2016 appearance at Cook County Skokie Court for the Morton Grove case. If convicted of the most serious charge, Sibben faces a minimum of 12 years in prison, prosecutors reported.

All suspects mentioned in criminal cases or reports are considered innocent until convicted in a court of law.

Local Youth, Police Kick-Off Public Awareness Campaign About Underage Drinking Prevention

The Arlington Heights Police Department in cooperation with the Link Together Coalition, OMNI Youth Services and the Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, and Wheeling Police Departments, will be kicking off the "YOUR ACTIONS MATTER!" campaign, which is a youth-led initiative that is designed to change adult attitudes about giving alcohol to minors.

The "YOUR ACTIONS MATTER!" campaign will take place this spring in participating stores across the State of Illinois. On Thursday, May 12, local high school and middle school students are part of a movement of youth working statewide with participating stores to spread the word that "YOUR ACTIONS MATTER!" Students, along with Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Prospect Heights, and Wheeling Police Officers, will be placing bottle hangers and posters in participating businesses that sell liquor. The youth-designed campaign materials carry a positive message, and serve as a reminder that preventing underage drinking is everyone's responsibility.

"YOUR ACTIONS MATTER!" materials were created by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission's Don't Be Sorry campaign to remind the general public that preventing underage drinking is everyone's responsibility.

A strong community message is sent when local businesses take responsibility for speaking out against underage drinking. Allowing minors to consume alcohol in your home, or any place under your control, carries the same penalties under the law as furnishing the alcohol, even if you don't supply the alcohol. Although summer is a particularly high-risk time of year, it is important to remember that providing alcohol to minors, or allowing them to drink in a place under your control, is against the law all year round.

Police Surveillance Operation Catches Mount Prospect Suspected Arsonists at Fairview School

On Monday, May 9, 2016, the Mount Prospect Police Department charged Daniel J. Mathews, 18 years old, of 310 S. Hi Lusi Avenue, Mount Prospect and one 17-year-old male juvenile of Mount Prospect with one felony count of Arson each, in connection with the destruction of a portable toilet on April 30, 2016.

Based on six fires of portable toilets located in various Mount Prospect parks that had occurred within the past nine months, a member of the Mount Prospect Police Department's Special Operations Unit was conducting surveillance near Fairview School Park on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at approximately 10:00 PM. The officer observed two male teenagers, later identified as Daniel J. Mathews and a male juvenile, walking in the area and approached them to find out the reason they were in the area. While speaking with the two teenagers, the officer learned they were in possession of multiple disposable lighters.

Upon further questioning of Mathews and the juvenile, they both admitted to lighting woodchips on fire and placing them in the portable toilet in Melas Park on April 30, 2016, causing approximately $2,000.00 worth of damage to the portable toilet.

Mathews was brought to a bond hearing on Monday, May 9, 2016 at the 3rd District Courthouse of Cook County in Rolling Meadows. His bond was set at $5,000.00 "D" and his next court appearance is June 2, 2016 at 10:30 AM in room 108. The 17 year old was charged and will appear in juvenile court.

The public is reminded that criminal charges are not evidence of guilt and that all defendants in a criminal case are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
