Summer Solstice Cardinal Sings on the First Evening of Summer 2016 During Rise of the Strawberry Moon

The summer solstice is the first day of the year with the longest daylight -- a day that falls on June 20, 21. In 2016 the summer solstice officially arrives at 5:34 p.m. CDT on Monday, June 20. Actually, June 21 is the first full day of summer when we receive the most sunlight, but it is not the hottest day of the year.

The oceans tend to retain their temperature, and heat up and cool down more slowly than air. By June 21 oceans are still gaining heat from the increasing longer daylight hours of Spring. The heat delay is about a 30-45 days after June 20-21. Similarly, in December the water still holds warmth from the summer, and the coldest days are about 30-45 days after December 20-21.

This year, summer solstice happens to coincide with June's Full Moon, which is known as the Strawberry Moon. The last time this happened was 1967, and the next time it will happen is 2062.

The name "Summer Solstice" comes from the Latin solstitium meaning "sun stands still". Actually the solstice happens because the sun's position relative to earth stops heading north at the Tropic of Cancer and then returns back southwards. The change occurs because of the tilt of the earth, and on the Summer Solstice, the northern hemisphere is maximally tilted toward the sun.

In the northern hemisphere this also means the daylight hours also are about to begin getting shorter.

By the way, the daylight shortening is really not noticeable until about July 7.

On June 25 we only lose about one minute of daylight compared to June 20, and on June 30 we have only lost about two minutes from June 20.

By July 6 we will have lost about 10 minutes of daylight, and starting July 7 we start losing at least one or two minutes per day.

Man, Who Palatine Police Say Tried to Run Them Down at Quentin Rd Apartment Lot, Facing Attempted Murder Charge

Michael Douglas, 26, of the 5000 block of West Thomas Street in Chicago is facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault after he allegedly tried to run over two police officers during his attempt to escape when the two undercover police officers identified themselves as police.

Douglas, 5'8" 165 LBS, while he was in his car, was shot in the leg by Palatine police Thursday night in an apartment parking lot at 525 North Quentin Road. The police-involved shooting occurred during his attempt to flee an active drug investigation.

Police say investigators tried to arrest Douglas in connection with the drug case about 7:40 p.m. Thursday, in the apartment complex parking lot in the 500 block of North Quentin Road. According to police, Douglas put his vehicle in reverse, slamming it into a parked vehicle behind him, then accelerated his vehicle forward in an attempt to run down the two officers.

Police said one of the officers, fearing for his life, shot at the vehicle. When the 10-year veteran of the Palatine Police Department fired at the vehicle, he apparently hit the suspect in the knee, but the suspect was able to exit the parking lot and flee to 1469 North Winslowe Drive. Police caught up with him at the location, where they expected him to be. He was found injured with a gunshot wound near his knee, and paramedics were called about 7:58 p.m.

Douglas was transported to Northwest Community Hospital by Palatine Fire Department paramedics. On Friday morning, Douglas was released from the hospital, where he was under guard by police. He was then transported in full police custody, and appeared in court on felony charges Monday of attempted murder and aggravated assault. He was also charged with two counts of unlawful delivery of cannabis stemming from the police confrontation. A Cook County Rolling Meadows Circuit Court judge set his bail at $1.25 million.

Douglas could face up to 30 years in prison if he is convicted of the attempted murder charge.

Members of the Cook County State's Attorney Office, Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force, and Palatine Police Department are investigating the case.

Michael A. Douglas is scheduled to return to court July 18, 2016 for a pre-trial hearing.

Arlington Heights Old County Buffet at Palatine Rd and Rand Rd Closes Suddenly

The Old Country Buffet restaurant in Arlington Heights' Town & Country Center was abruptly closed Wednesday June 15, 2016, a few month after surviving closures at other locations in February 2016.

Parent company Ovation Brands in February announced the permanent closure of 74 underperforming restaurants nationwide -- under the names of Old Country Buffet, Hometown Buffet, Ryan's, Fire Mountain and Country Buffet.

But on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, the Arlington Heights Country Buffet at Palatine Road between Rand Road and Arlington Heights Road abruptly closed.

A sign in the window announced:

"To our valued guests, this location is now CLOSED. Thank you for your business and we hope to serve you at another location very soon."

Recently, a Bloomingdale location and the Arlington Heights location were the only suburban locations, and the Bloomingdale location on Gary Avenue had already closed. Years ago there was also a location in Rolling Meadows with a Golf Road address across from the Arlington Heights Lowes on Algonquin Road. The Rolling Meadows Old County Buffet closed in March 2012.

Ovation Brands had declared Chapter 11 in March 2016. At the time of the bankruptcy, the Greer, South Carolina-based company operated 328 restaurants and employed 17,000 people.

Now three major tenants of the Town & County Shopping Center have left the building. Ashley Furniture closed in October 2015 and Joe Caputo & Sons closed in November 2015. Joe Caputo & Sons only occupied their Arlington Heights store for 15 months following their opening in June 2014.
