Snow-Covered Traffic Signal Blamed as Possible Contributing Factor in Crash with Injuries at Arlington Heights Rd and White Oak St Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 1:27 PM Wednesday to a report of a crash with injuries at Arlington Heights Road and White Oak Street Arlington Heights, Il Arlington Heights, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received a report a person in one of the vehicles was injured.

A white Nissan Altima and a red Toyota Prius were involved in the crash. The Nissan had front-end damage and the Toyota had damage on the driver's door side in a "T-Bone" style crash.

One patient was transported to Northwest Community Hospital.

Snow packed traffic signals, blocking the view of red, yellow and green lights are suspected of contributing to the cause of the crash.

IDOT maintains traffic signals at many of Arlington Heights intersections including Arlington Heights Road and White Oak Street.

The Village of Arlington Heights maintains Arlington Heights Road and Olive Street and some other intersections nearby, but IDOT manages Arlington Heights Road and Sigwalt Street, which was also snowpacked (shown in video).

IDOT maintains over 2,700 traffic signals in Cook County and other Chicago collar counties, and have been working to clear the lights.

Since most traffic signal lights have been converted to energy-efficient LED lights, there is a one drawback. Part of LED efficiency is that energy is not wasted as heat. Since the lamps in the traffic signals operate at lower temperatures, they don't melt the snow that obscures the colored lens.

Officials are recommending that motorists take extra care while passing through intersections in case an obscured light causes another motorist to miss the red signal.

Of course it would likely be a distracted driver or fatigued driver that would pass through a controlled intersection without signal illumination. Nevertheless, the chance of a motorist's failure to recognize or be triggered into awarenews because of the lack of a visible signal is a reality. In lights observed by Cardinal News, it seemed like the red light was the most obscured by snow -- compared to yellow and green -- and some red lights were barely visible, even when looking right at the red illuminated light.

Male Retail Theft Suspect; Call for Injuries While Hiding Jewelry in Body at Department Store in Arlington Heights

Arlington Heights police responded about 4:33 PM Monday to a report of a male that was injured when he tried to avoid being arrested for retail theft at Kohl's, 800 West Dundee Road Arlington Heights, Il. Police received a report that a male suspect in a retail theft case possibly attempted to steal jewelry. A witness familiar with the case of attempted retail theft told Cardinal News on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 that when police arrived Monday they discovered that the suspect possibly seriously injured himself while trying to hide jewelry in his rectum to avoid being arrested for retail theft.

Police called paramedics to the scene when they learned the suspect may have injured himself.

Initially police are not publicly confirming whether a suspect arrested on Monday actually inserted jewelry into his rectum. Police also would not confirm whether the suspect may have falsely claimed to have hidden jewelry in his rectum.

A police record lists an arrest at Kohl's, 800 Dundee Road on Monday afternoon on November 12, 2018. Police arrested Adam Scott Wolf, age 21, of Buffalo Grove. Wolf was arrested and charged with Retail Theft at 4:45 p.m. Adam Scott Wolf was released on I-Bond, and is scheduled to appear at Cook County Circuit Court Rolling Meadows on Thursday, November 29, 2018.

Cardinal News was able to obtain an additional independent source that confirmed that a shoplifting suspect on Monday afternoon was initially suspected of having hidden jewelry in his rectum. Neither source knew the outcome.

All suspects are innocent of all accusations unless found guilty in a court of law.

Seven-Vehicle Crash with 6 Hurt on Lake Cook Rd West of Arlington Heights Road Monday Night

Arlington Heights police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:16 PM Monday to a report of a multiple vehicle crash near Lake Cook and Arlington Heights Rd Arlington Heights, Il. Police and firefighter/paramedics received multiple calls that the crash was located just west of Arlington Heights Road. Northwest Central Dispatch also received a telematic roadside assistance call from BMW Assist (BMW SOS) that indicated a BMW X5 was involved in a crash with the driver no responding. There were also reports that people were lying on the ground and one person was being pulled from a car, but fortunately the people were not initially believed to have life-threatening injuries.

Some of the people were still on the ground when the first firefighter/paramedics arrived on the scene.

Six people were transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

A witness on the scene said that cars waiting for a red light to change to green in the eastbound lanes of Lake Cook Road were affected when the driver of a large white pickup truck, also eastbound, crashed into the rear end of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, which was pushed forward. The eastbound Jeep Grand Cherokee was pushed forward causing more eastbound vehicles and oncoming westbound vehicles to be hit.
Some of the secondary collisions were head-on collisions.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee was severely damaged. Also severely damaged were a black BMW SUV (X5), a white Toyota Celica convertible with the top down, and a smaller white pickup truck. Two other sedans received less damage, and were driven away after police took their information for report.

Five vehicles were recovered and towed away simultaneously by three men with three three trucks from Hillside Towing. Two flatbed tow trucks towed two vehicles each in one trip away from the crash scene.

Traffic was blocked in both directions until about 8:20 p.m. when the crash scene was cleared. Buffalo Grove's Quint 25's crew blocked the westbound lanes of Lake Cook Road and Engine 4's crew blocked eastbound lanes of Lake Cook Road and lit the scene of the unlit, dark stretch of road.

A Long Grove ambulance, possibly A55 was also on the scene, stopping as they were returning to Long Grove from the hospital.
